PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element, low in power consumption, high in luminance and performance. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal layer of this liquid crystal element, a liquid crystal composition containing at least a discotheque liquid crystal and a stick- shaped liquid crystal is used. The discotheque liquid crystal and the stick-shaped liquid crystal exist in a phase-separation state. The discotheque liquid crystal exhibit a nematic discotheque phase.
