PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resin composition which exhibits an excellent gas barrier property even under a high humidity without deteriorating the original transparency of a vinyl alcohol-based polymer, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This resin composition comprising (A) a vinyl alcohol-based polymer having an ethylene content of 0 to 70 mol.% and (B) a sellable laminar silicate into whose layers a quaternary ammonium ion represented by formula (1) [R1 is H, a 1 to 30C alkyl or benzyl; R2 and R3 are each (CH2CH2O)nH, (CH2CH(CH3)O)nH or a 1 to 30C alkyl; R4 is (CH2CH2O)nH or (CH2CH(CH3)O)nH; (n) is 1 to 50] is introduced.
