PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device capable of satisfactorily suppressing light leakage to an adjacent display region and suitable for a liquid crystal display device in which split illumination driving is performed. SOLUTION: In the surface light source device provided with plural light sources arranged parallel to one another, a reflecting plate disposed on a lower surface of the light sources and reflecting light to an upper side and a diffusion plate disposed on an upper surface of the light source, the diffusion plate has a first diffusion plate disposed on the light source side and a second diffusion plate disposed at an interval of a prescribed distance upwardly from the first diffusion plate and the reflecting plate has projecting parts each of which projects so as to come close to the first diffusion plate between the light sources to partition the light sources. Since the projecting part comes close to the first diffusion plate, light emitted from each light source never leaks to the adjacent display region. Since the second diffusion plate is formed at an interval of the prescribed distance from the first diffusion plate, illuminance distribution generated by a tip end of the projecting part is uniformized and the generation of a dark line or a bright line can be prevented.
