PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a syndiotactic polystyrene nano composite material having improved crystal characteristics and a high mechanical strength, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This syndiotactic polystyrene nano composite material having the improved crystal characteristics and the high mechanical strength and comprising a polymer matrix containing syndiotactic polystyrene and a laminar clay material which is homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix, arbitrarily contains a polymer or oligomer compatible or partially compatible with the syndiotactic polystyrene, and has an interlayer distance of >=20Åand into which an organic onium cation is inserted. The syndiotactic polystyrene nano composite material can be prepared by polymerization and dissolution mixing or solution mixing therein.
