PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent character data from being recorded by a language system contrarily to the intention of user. SOLUTION: The camera is provided with a language system storing means for storing character data on plural language systems, language system selecting means 18, 19 and 20 for selecting one language system from plural language systems, optional character string setting means 18, 19 and 20 for setting an optional character string by using the selected language system, a character string data storing means 3 for storing plural set character string data, a character string data reading means 1 for reading the character string data on a character string to be recorded from plural stored character data, a character string recording means 9 for recording the character string based on the read character string data on a recording medium at photographing, and a character string data processing means 1, and in the case the language system is changed in accordance with the selection by the language system selecting means 20, prior to the recording operation by the character string recording means 9, a prescribed processing of the character string data by the former language system stored by the means 3 is performed by the character string data processing means 1.
