摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine reconciling the catalyst utilization efficiency and trapping efficiency of a filter and preventing the release of the trapped particulates to accelerate oxidation. SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control device is provided with filters 22a, 22b, 22c having a plurality of bulkheads to temporarily trap the particulates in the exhaust gas when the exhaust gas passes through the bulkheads and carrying an active oxygen releasing agent accelerating the oxidation of particulates in the bulkheads and exhaust reversing means 71 and 72 switching a first flow 76 feeding the exhaust gas from one side of the filters 22a, 22b, 22c and a second flow 77 feeding the exhaust gas from the other side of the filters 22a, 22b, 22c in turn. The first flow 76 and the second flow 77 are switched in turn by the exhaust reversing means 71 and 72 to feed the exhaust gas to the filters 22a, 22b, 22c for the oxidation and removal of particulates. The central portion 22b and outside portions 22a and 22c of the bulkheads differ in mesh coarseness in the exhaust flow direction of the bulkheads.</p>
