PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method for a solid-state image pickup element that can adjust an exposure period in detail without restriction of the adjustment width. SOLUTION: This invention provides the drive method for a solid-state image pickup element that controls a stored charge amount of a photoelectric conversion element by changing its charge storage time, where read timing of the signal charge from the photoelectric conversion element and charge transfer pulse generating timing to transfer the read signal charge control the charge storage time without changing the charge transfer pulse generating timing within one horizontal period at the same time.
