PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a ceramic layer, which can deposit a ceramic on the surface of a non-electroconductive member without providing an electroconductive film on it. SOLUTION: A pair of electrodes 5 and 6, namely anode and cathode, are provided in a suspension 19 in which ceramic particles 3 are dispersed. A cylindrical alumina porous body 2 is provided around the inner electrode 5. The alumina particles 3 move towards the inner electrode 5 according to an electrophoresis phenomenon, when a potential difference is given between both electrodes 5 and 6. Then, moved alumina particles 3 are attached to the surface of the alumina porous body 2 to form a ceramic layer 20, because the alumina porous body 2 is provided around the inner electrode 5. Thus, the dense ceramic layer 20 with a uniform thickness is directly formed on the alumina porous body 2, and the ceramic layer 20 with a satisfactory quality can be manufactured easily.
