PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit a polarized wave of an optical signal, while keeping the polarization constant in a polarized wave maintaining optical fiber. SOLUTION: The periphery of the core of the polarized wave maintaining optical fiber is encircled by a photonic crystal structure cladding member, a diffraction grating is provided in the clad member, and the grating interval of the diffraction grating is set to the interval, by which light is confined into the core. Since the diameters of the cross-sectional shape of the core are different in two axial directions orthogonally crossing within the surface orthogonal to the optical axis, modes in the X-axial direction and the Y-axial direction of the electric field of light within the core are generated, and the state of the polarized wave of propagating light becomes constant. |
