PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of detecting the adjacent sizes of a plurality of types of originals even without arranging a photoelectronic sensor corresponding to each type of originals. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a photoelectronic sensor movement control means 11 for reciprocating a reflection photoelectronic sensor 11a arranged under contact glass 9a within a prescribed linear movement path and a main control means 1 for discriminating the largeness/smallness of a movement period form turn of the sensor 11a that moves in the linear movement path till turn off of the sensor 11a and identifying an original size.
