PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new optical switching device having high contrast which can perform both of transmission and reflection displays by using a liquid crystal material. SOLUTION: The optical switching device consists of two substrates disposed parallel to each other and having at least a pair of electrodes formed on the inner faces opposite to each other or on one inner face, and a liquid crystal material layer sealed between the substrates. An insoluble light-controlling medium having a smaller outer diameter than the thickness of the liquid crystal material layer is uniformly dispersed and mixed in the liquid crystal material layer, and when an electric field is applied on the electrodes, the light-controlling medium moves to form a region with densely dispersed light-controlling medium and a region with leanly dispersed medium to generate difference in the transmittance and to control light. Since the loss of light during transmitting the optical switching device is extremely little, extremely bright display with high contrast can be obtained without using a polarizing plate.
