PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal processing unit that can reduce flicker caused when in-field interpolation processing is conducted and also can reduce flicker without malfunction even in a video area having a high frequency. SOLUTION: The video signal processing unit is provided with a field memory that delays an interlace video signal by one field, a luminance level discrimination means that discriminates a luminance level from a video signal of one preceding field and a video signal received at present, a nonlinear processing means that applies nonlinear processing to the video signal received at present on the basis of the luminance level discrimination signal, a linear processing means that applies linear processing to the video signal received at present, and an in-field interpolation signal generating means that selects a signal after the nonlinear processing or a signal after the linear processing on the basis of a motion information signal and an output signal from the luminance level discrimination means and outputs the selected signal. Then the video signal processing unit can reduce flicker due to the in-field interpolation processing without malfunction even in a high frequency part of the video signal.
