An injection molding process for manufacturing a molded article, such as a seal for closing the open end of a container of an electrochemical cell. The process includes injecting molten polymeric material into a cavity provided in a mold and generally configured to the shape of a finished seal. A pin extends generally through the hub region to form the central opening for receiving a current collector. The process further includes injecting molten polymeric material along the outer perimeter of the pin into the mold cavity so that the molten polymeric material flows around the pin and substantially fills the cavity, hardening the molten polymeric material to provide a hardened battery seal, opening the mold, and removing the seal from the mold and from the pin so as to provide a substantially smooth opening in the central hub. |
