The system enables a steer-by-wire mode and has a hand torque actuator (4) connected to the steering control, e.g. the steering wheel (2), to simulate the steering resistance or restoring torque in steer-by-wire mode. A damping arrangement (9,14,17) is provided to damp adjustments of the steering wheel performed by the driver in the event of failure of the hand torque actuator in steer-by-wire mode.
