A calender (24) having a heated first roll (28) which is opposed to and forms a nip (36) with a soft surface counter roll system (34) comprised of a second roll (41) which has an outer shell (40). An endless polyurethane belt (38) or blanket having an inside diameter 5 to 50 mm larger than the outside diameter of the second roll shell (40), is mounted about the second roll (41). The outer circumferential edges of the polyurethane belt (38) are held by clamping rings (48) to bearings (50) which are circumferentially mounted about the second roll (41) on the roller gables (46). A small quantity of oil may be placed between the surface of the second roll shell (40) and the polyurethane belt (38).
