Aldehydes are produced by reaction of at least one compound having a vinyl- or vinylidene group with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a source of Group VIII metals and a divalent diphosphine ligand whereby the molar ratio of ligand to metal is at least 5. Aldehydes (I) are produced by reaction of at least one compound having a vinyl- or vinylidene group with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of a source of Group VIII metals and a divalent diphosphine ligand of formula (1) whereby the molar ratio of ligand to metal is at least 5. A = together with the phosphorous atom it is bonded to comprises a 2-phospha-tricyclo(3.3.1.1(3,7)) decyl group, optionally having non-neighboring carbon atoms substituted by oxygen atoms and optionally substituted; X = 1-10 atom containing bridging chain.
