Production of a CO- and H2-containing treatment gas comprises forming a treatment gas for catalytically converting a hydrocarbon gas with carbon monoxide, oxygen and/or an oxygen-containing gas mixture in a catalyst retort (2). Heat fed to the retort can be varied over its length. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a heat treatment device for carburizing and hardening metallic material comprising a gas generator; and (b) a gas generator comprising a catalyst retort and a heating device.
