The system has a distribution pipe, a high pressure pump driven independently of engine speed and an associated fuel dispensing unit. A regulating valve has a piston that is subjected to a coil spring in the open state and that is actuated against spring force by an electromagnet armature bolt in the closed state. The valve piston has at least one, preferably several, radial control openings connected to the suction side of the high pressure pump. The system has a distribution pipe and a high pressure pump driven independently of engine speed and an associated fuel dispensing unit (10) based on an electromagnetically actuated regulating valve (11) with its input connected to a pilot feed valve. The regulating valve has a valve piston that is subjected to a coil spring in the open state and that is actuated against spring force by an electromagnet armature bolt (14) in the closed state. The valve piston (23) has at least one, preferably several, radial control openings (35) connected to the suction side of the high pressure pump.
