摘要 A method of defining and recording the intended refraction before selecting a lens for intraocular implant introduces the concept of an intention error and lens selection error to be used in conjunction with the lens power error. The intention error is defined as being equal to the actual refraction (ie the stabilised post-operative refraction) less the intended (target) refraction. The Lens Selection Error is defined as being equal to the predicted refraction less the intended (target) refraction. For normal eyes with a monofocal intraocular lens implant, the refractive target value is often not recorded precisely. The intraocular lens power calculated to result in emmetropia to slight myopia may be a default to provide good distance vision without glasses. Keeping a record of the precise target refraction allows a thorough description and analysis of the lens power errors associated with intraocular lens implantation, especially in situations where a lens power is chosen with the expectation of a different refraction to that which is calculated by the formula for the predicted refraction.
