This invention comprises an improved gel support tube formed of a selectively permeable microporous polymer for use in electrophoresis, particularly two-dimensional electrophoresis. The microporous tube is selected to be non-wettable during a first electrophoresitic separation. The only limitation on the material and pore size is that the material and pore size prevent passage of sample through the pores in the absence of detergent and permit the passage of sample through the pores in the presence of detergent. Following the first electrophoretic separation, which is performed in the absence of detergent, the separated components can be removed through the pores of the gel support tube by treatment with detergent, followed by a second electrophoretic separation or absorption onto a surface.
