A column movable type machining center capable of preventing chips from falling down on the upper surface of longitudinal guide rails (2, 2) for guiding a spindle (10) in longitudinal direction and reducing the breadth of the upper part thereof, wherein a column (6) is installed movably in longitudinal direction through the guide rails (2, 2) on the upper surface of a bed (1), longitudinal erecting and telescoping cover walls (24, 24) are extended forward from the right and left positions of a lateral erecting cover wall (13) formed at the front of the column (6), the front end edge (24a) of each erecting and telescoping cover wall (24) is fixed to a portion formed integrally with the bed (1), and the lateral position of the lower end edge (b) of each erecting and telescoping cover wall (24) are positioned near the inside of the longitudinal guide rail (2) and the vertical position of the lower end edge (b) are positioned under the upper surface of the longitudinal guide rail (2).
