The invention relates to a cylinder (1) for manipulating a load, comprising: a cylinder housing (2) with a cylinder chamber (3) therein; an assembly, movable in the cylinder chamber of a piston (4) in the cylinder chamber and a piston rod (5) connected to the piston and extending outside the cylinder chamber, wherein the cylinder has a substantially non-linear force characteristic and the load has a force characteristic substantially differing herefrom, and a variable force balancing which acts substantially on the cylinder housing and the assembly and which variably balances the difference between the forces associated with the load and with the cylinder.
