The method involves determining the absorption of light, especially infrared light transmitted from a source (12.1,12.2) into the medium under investigation and whose non-absorbed or reflected component is detected by a receiver (18.1,18.2), whereby the light is transmitted directly from the transmitter to the receiver through the medium. The light passes through a channel (10,16) before and after the medium and is scattered at least once. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for determining the mixture composition of any media or a quantity of material.
