Porous silicon material is produced which is activatable to produce visible luminescence, in which: (a) more than 50% by thickness of the porous silicon material is luminescent with a luminescence efficiency of greater than 0.3%; and/or (b) more than 80% by thickness of the porous silicon material is luminescent with a luminescence efficiency of greater than 0.1%; the porous silicon material having one or more of the following properties: (i) a sheet thickness greater than 10 mu m, and a single layer structure, which is exhibited under cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy analysis; (ii) a thickness greater than 20 mu m; and (iii) a sheet thickness greater than 10 mu m, and substantially no voids, crazing and peeling discernible in the porous silicon material by scanning electron microscopic analysis at a magnification of 7,000. <IMAGE>
