A process for the oxidation of a hydride of an actinide comprises the treatment of the hydride in an atmosphere comprising argon which includes an effective amount of oxygen. Uranium hydride, which is pyrophoric, can be produced by corrosion of fuel during pond storage. Treatment of the hydride in an argon atmosphere containing controlled amounts of oxygen renders it safe to handle.
