A pulse shaping apparatus shapes an input pulse 500 into an output optical pulse 616 having substantially constant optical power. The apparatus includes a modulator 602 which acts upon the input pulse under the control of a control signal and a sampler 620 which takes a sample of the incoming pulses for further processing. In a feedback configuration, the modulator acts on the incoming pulse under the control of an error signal, the modulated pulse is then sampled, the sample processed and the error signal generated from the processed signal. In a feed-forward configuration (figure 8), the incoming pulse is sampled, the sample processed and the pulse modulated under the control of an error signal resulting from the processing steps. In an alternative embodiment, the input pulse may be passed through a limiting medium that saturates at a predetermined power level.
