PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably obtain the seam of desirable double multi-thread chain stitch or flat stitch where looper string gets caught by the loop of needle thread on the reverse side of cloth while the looper string is loosened without leaving any traces on the cloth. SOLUTION: This sewing machine is provided with a needle 1 that moves up and down through cloth W on a needle plate, and a looper 2 that retreats under the needle plate, captures needle string 10 remaining under the needle plate due to the upward movement of the needle 1 by the advance of the looper 2 and withdraws it following the feed of the cloth W. On the other hand, the sewing machine captures looper string 20 remaining under the iron plate due to retreat/entry by the downward movement of the needle 1 and forms the seam of desirable double multi-thread chain stitch or flat stitch. The sewing machine is provided with a retainer lever 30 advances and retreats back and forth in a surface that is nearly in parallel with the feed surface of the cloth W in linking with the up/down movement of the needle 1, and the retainer lever 30 captures the looper string 20 at the advance side of the looper 2 from the needle 1 when advancing toward the rear, thus, retaining the captured looper string 20 in a tension state at an area to the needle 1.
