PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a benzene derivative as a liquid crystal material capable of lowering threshold voltage without significantly deteriorating its liquid crystal characteristics including current value and response, and to provide a liquid crystal composition containing the above material as a constitutive material. SOLUTION: This benzene derivative as a liquid crystal material is shown by general formula I (for example, a compound of formula II, formula III or formula IV). The other objective liquid crystal composition contains the above material as a constitutive element.
