PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet carrying roller capable of surely picking up or carrying a sheet such as paper, document or the like in every rotating direction regardless of the rotating direction of a roller. SOLUTION: This sheet carrying roller 10 comprises a core 12 and an elastic layer 14 arranged on the circumference of the core 12. The circumferential surface of the elastic layer 14 is formed into a fishskined or sawtooth-like shape having a prescribed pitch direction over the whole circumference, and such a sawtooth-like shaped part 16 or fishskined part 18 is partitioned into an even number of sections 14A and 14B along the circumferential direction, and formed so that the pitch directions of the adjacent sections are opposite to each other.
