PURPOSE: Shift control structure of an automatic transmission with detecting the remaining amount of fuel and a shift control method according to the fuel amount are provided to reduce power consumption and increase travel distance by preventing kickdown shift with lowering the maximum travel speed in decreasing the fuel amount below the critical value. CONSTITUTION: A shift control structure of an automatic transmission is composed of a sender(52) outputting the position of a float(51) on a fuel tank(50); a varistor(53) changing resistance according to the signal from the sender; a fuel gauge(54) indicating the remaining amount of fuel according to intensity of current flowing through the varistor; a varistor switch(55) varying resistance according to the signal from the sender; a fuel warning lamp(56) turning on by the varistor switch; an ECU(Electronic Control Unit)(60) converting into low fuel shift control pattern in lighting the warning lamp; a TCU(Transmission Control Unit)(70) converting the power transmission passage according to the throttle opening degree and adjusting the shifting pattern; and a flickering circuit(61) flickering the warning lamp at low fuel. Fuel consumption is reduced by preventing kickdown shift.
