PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer in which generation of smudge can be eliminated at the time of head down. SOLUTION: When a ribbon save function is released and a thermal head 25 is touched to a sheet P, a motor 49 on the ribbon winding side is fed with a voltage Vr+αwhich is higher than a voltage Vr for generating a winding force suitable to the diameter of a thermal transfer ribbon. Subsequently, the voltage being fed to the motor 49 is lowered to the level Vr for generating a winding force suitable to the diameter of the thermal transfer ribbon.
