[Also in Group XI] In apparatus for bonding thermoplastic sheets by dielectric heating, an electrode comprises a mounting member with a plurality of intersecting grooves formed therein, and a plurality of electrode members adapted to be selectively mounted in the slots so as to form a geometric pattern. As shown, a thermoplastic sheet 58 is bonded to a capsule 54 of like material containing an article, e.g. a toy 56, by dielectric heating under pressure between an upper electrode 28 and rectangular electrode members 42, 43, 45, 47 (Fig. 3), the pressure being applied to the electrode 28 when it has been moved downwardly into contact with the sheet 58. The electrode members are pressed into slots 44, 46 formed in a mounting plate 38, and may be provided with one or more notches 62 to facilitate their removal from the slots. Alternatively, the electrode members may be retained in the slots by mechanical locks (not shown) or by wedging shims (also not shown). The mounting plate may also be provided with slots 48, 50 arranged diagonally with respect to the slots 44, 46, in which electrode members can be mounted. Alternatively, the slots in the mounting plate may be arranged to form any other desired geometric pattern. In another example (Fig. 5, not shown), the upper electrode is similar to the lower electrode, the pattern formed by one set of electrode members being a mirror-image of the pattern formed by the other set. The upper electrode is moved upwardly and downwardly by a fluid pressure piston and cylinder mechanism 30. The apparatus also includes a high-frequency electric generator 10 of known type.</p> |
