Process for reducing excess sludge production in an aerobic wastewater treatment plant comprising adding excess sludge to a clarified water stream from the final sedimentation tank, treating the stream with ozone, and recycling the ozonized stream to the aeration tank so that the equilibrium between killed and undamaged microorganisms maintains a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of less than 75 g/m3> in the treated water, is new.
