Luminaire which is edge-illuminated by an array of LEDs

A luminaire comprises a panel 1 of transparent material on at least one surface of which an array of speckles is formed wherein a groove 3 is cut into one edge 2 of the panel 1 into which is sunk a light source provided by an elongate array of LED's 6 mounted on a PCB 5 which is fastened in place by the introduction of a sealant. Light generated by the array of LED's 6 is emitted from the speckled surface. A method of manufacturing such a luminaire including the step of cutting the groove 3 using a rotary tool is also disclosed. Also claimed is a method of operating a luminaire comprising LEDs of different colours mounted in independently controllable circuits.
