A safety device for a bed comprises a flexible sheet (44) which can be wound onto or withdrawn from a spring-loaded roller (46) located in an elongate housing (30). The end of the sheet (44) which is withdrawn from the housing (30) is provided with a rigid pole (50) whose ends can be releasably retained in one of two locating pin assemblies (52, 54) attached to an upright (20) of the bed. The flexible sheet (44) can be paid out from the roller (46) and retained in position by engaging the ends of the rigid pole (50) in the locating pin assembly (52, 54). When the safety device is not required, the locating pin assemblies (52, 54) are unlocated to allow the ends of the rigid pole (50) to be removed, thereby allowing the flexible sheet (44) to be wound back onto the roller (46) and into the housing (30). |
