The invention relates to hydrophilic copolymers built up from polymeric chains on which acidic and basic side groups are arranged, and to the use of these copolymers for hydrophilising lithographic printing plates and as binders in photosensitive lithographic coatings. The copolymers are prepared, in particular, by free-radical polymerisation.
