PURPOSE: An AC rotating electric machine is provided to obtain a sufficient rotational output for starting an engine by operating a rotor at a high speed when starting, without increasing the size of the machine. CONSTITUTION: An AC rotating electric machine comprises a rotor(100) fixed to a rotor shaft(12) arranged in a bracket(80); a planetary gear device(111) including a sun gear(20) fixed to an end of the rotor shaft, a planetary gear(30) engaged with the sun gear, a cylindrical member(40) having an internal gear portion(41,42) to be engaged with the planetary gear and which is formed at an inner wall surface of the cylindrical member, a carrier(61) for supporting the planetary gear via a planetary gear shaft and which is connected to a power transmission device(112), and a carrier support shaft(64) extending in an axial direction from the carrier; a one-way clutch(113) which is fixed to the rotor shaft and connected to the carrier support shaft and planetary gear shaft, wherein the one-way clutch permits rotating force from the carrier support shaft and planetary gear shaft to be transmitted to the rotor shaft; and an electromagnetic clutch(110) having a main body(70) fixed to the bracket, and an electromagnetic clutch follower(73) arranged to be opposed to the electromagnetic clutch main body and connected to and separated from the electromagnetic clutch.
