PROCESS FOR REDUCING TOTAL SULPHUR CONTENT IN GASES CONTAINING HYDROGEN SULPHIDE AND OTHER SULPHUR COMPONENTS

A process for reducing the total sulphur content of a gas containing hydrogen sulphide and other sulphur components comprises: (a) contacting the gas with a reducing gas in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising at least one metal component selected from groups VIB and VIII supported on a carrier comprising amorphous silica-alumina; (b) contacting the product gas from (a) with a hydrolysis catalyst for conversion of the carbonyl sulphide to hydrogen sulphide; and (c) removing hydrogen sulphide from the gas obtained in (b) to produce a gas with reduced total sulphur content.
