A non-retractable utility knife handle having a magnet (26) in the blade receiving portion of the utility knife handle for retaining a blade and thereby preventing the blade from falling out during blade replacement or when the utility knife handle is opened. Similarly, a magnet can be placed in a retractable utility knife. In a retractable utility knife, a magnet in a blade carriage mechanism retains the blade. The blade carriage (122) is configured to securely hold a blade and allows the blade to be slidably disposed within the utility knife and adjustable to a plurality of distinct locked positions. The blade carriage is biased towards a locked position, however, the utility knife includes an actuator (82) which allows a user to position the blade in one or more desired positions with respect to the utility knife handle. In addition, the above described utility knifes can include a second magnet (36, 102) for retaining one or more blades in a blade storage area. The second magnet operates in a similar manner as the other magnet, thereby preventing the one or more stored blades from falling out during blade replacement or when the utility knife handle is opened. |
