PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a highly unsaturated fatty acid capable of increasing the amount of its production by using a highly unsaturated fatty acid-producing microorganism. SOLUTION: This method for producing the highly unsaturated fatty acid is characterized by culturing the microorganism having the highly unsaturated fatty acid-producing capability in a medium containing a fatty acid synthesis inhibitor, cerulenin.
