PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop a shuttle body before a shuttle body engaging projection contacts with detaining members without overrunning during the action of an opener on the shuttle body. SOLUTION: This horizontal hook has the opener 5 which is used for the horizontal hook consisting of a rotating hook rotating in synchronization with the lifting motion of a sewing needle and the shuttle body which is rotatably supported at the rotating hook, is formed with the engaging projection and abutment section on the outer periphery and is loosely fitted with the engaging projection between the two immobile detaining members and which is movable between the position where its front end pushes an abutment section 2b in a direction reverse from the rotating direction of the rotating hook and the position where its front end is parted from the abutment section 2b, and a drive means which moves the opener 5 back and forth. The component of force in the direction perpendicular to the abutment section 2b acts thereon when the opener 5 pushes the abutment section 2b in the direction reverse from the rotating direction of the rotating hook.
