A process for the preparation of aromatic aldehydes comprising the steps of condensing a phenone ketal with a vinyl ether in the presence of a Lewis acid, subjecting the resulting acetal to acidic hydrolysis to form the corresponding alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde, and optionally hydrogenating the C=C double bond of said unsaturated aldehyde.
