PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recognition system capable of performing recognition without worrying about surrounding illumination conditions, reducing a data amount, quickly performing processing and easily constructing the system. SOLUTION: A moving object is provided with a red LED for emitting light of a peak wavelength 620 nm and a beam angle 50 deg. and the image of a moving object to be a recognition object is picked up in a video image pickup device 100 (S1). A CPU 201 controls a capture card 210, fetches a video image picked up in the video image pickup device 100 and stores it in an image memory 205 (S2). A luminescent point for constituting a pattern is detected from the image stored in the image memory 205 and the segmentation of the image of a specified area and the extraction of a feature amount and position information are performed with the luminescent point as a reference point (S3). Individual identification (pattern matching) is performed on the basis of the feature amount of the specified area segmented and stored in a main memory 204 (S4).
