PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine translation apparatus and a translation processing method for making a modification relation clear and performing translation in the word order in Japanese, by displaying a complicated syntax, which appears in the claim of a patent specification in English on a screen while keeping original sentences as they are. SOLUTION: A claim in English is divided, while defining a transitional phrase as a reference and by collating patterns, and the claim in English is shaped. Then, a modification phrase is separated, by analyzing the shaped claim and a hierarchical structure is prepared. With such a processing, the complicated modification relation of the claim in English can be displayed on a screen. Afterwards, the data structure is inverted in S410 and translated sentences are outputted in S420-S440. By inverting the data structure in S410, the claim can be translated in the word order in Japanese.
