PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a close contact type image sensor that suppresses the power consumption of a light source to a required minimum amount and to provide an image reader employing this image sensor. SOLUTION: The close contact type image sensor 13 provided with a light source 22 and an image sensor 23 and the light source 22 is devised such that its lighting width is variable with a width of an original to be read.
