PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image pickup element with a simple configuration to read an image with high quality without increasing the cost and to provide an image reader using it. SOLUTION: The color image pickup element 5 is provided with image pickup element groups respectively reading R, G, B lights, and each image pickup element group includes 1st photoelectric conversion element arrays 51, 53, 55 and 2nd photoelectric conversion element arrays 52, 54, 56. The 1st photoelectric conversion element arrays 51, 53, 55 and the 2nd photoelectric conversion element arrays 52, 54, 56 are arranged so that position of the respective image pickup elements are matched in a main scanning direction. By using pixel data read by the 1st photoelectric conversion element arrays 51, 53, 55 and pixel data read by the 2nd photoelectric conversion element arrays 52, 54, 56, averaging processing or summing processing is applied to respective two pixels at matched positions in the main scanning direction by each line. Thus, the resolution is enhanced, noise components are reduced and the S/N can be enhanced.
