PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the processing time of a write command to continuous positions on a disk from a host device in which a recording and reproducing unit being managed is smaller than a minimum unit for error correction. SOLUTION: When a write command is issued from a host device 20, a system control microcomputer 18 that is notified of the command through a host I/F control section 19 moves a recording and reproducing head 12 to the position on the disk for which a writing is requested. During the above operation, the device 20 transfers the data to be recorded to a recording and reproducing buffer 15 through the section 19. Then, the data are stored in an ECC memory 16 and error correction codes are added. Then, the data to which error correction codes are added are modulated with a data modulation demodulation section 14 and recording is conducted from a target position on the disk. When the entire data for which writing is requested from the device 20 are normally recorded, a normal completion status is returned to the device 20 and the command is terminated.
