PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a picture projector by which the utilization efficiency of the emitted light of a light source is enhanced and excellent luminance is obtained. SOLUTION: The picture projector provided with a light source part 11, a lens array 13, a condenser lens 16, a color resolving means 17 and an optical modulating means 18 by which a rectangular picture element is obtained is provided with a beam reducing means 14 to reduce the luminous flux width of the picture element of the optical modulating means 18 in a short side direction and a diaphragm 15 to regulate the luminous flux width in the long side direction of the picture element. Also, the shape of each lens cell constituting the lens array 13 is made as a square. Also, a polarized light changing means 12 to increase the luminous flux width in the long side direction of the picture element of the optical modulating means 18 is provided between the light source part 11 and the beam reducing means 14.
