A system and method for the automatic detection and matching of telephone line impedance which makes use of level detection (103) and source impedance (102) circuits in electronic communication with the existing circuitry of a telephone jack (100) are disclosed. This invention uses modified Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) to sense the impedance of the telephone line (108) and to correct its impedance to match the impedance of the telephone line (108). By automatically sensing and adjusting the source impedance (102) of the CPE this invention reduces return loss, improves hybrid efficiency and thereby improves audio quality.
