The present invention provides test systems, kits and methods for detecting bacteria in a sample. In general, the invention uses at least one of chitin or chitosan oligosaccharide to facilitate detection of the bacteria. The invention has many important applications including use in the efficient detection of a wide spectrum of pathogenic or potentially pathogenic bacteria.
